A Message From the Chair

Ruth Benca, MD
Ruth Benca, MD, Chair of the UC Irvine School of Medicine Department of Psychiatry & Human Behavior.

The Department of Psychiatry & Human Behavior has a tripartite mission: to deliver leading-edge research, to provide expert and compassionate clinical care and to educate the next generation of psychiatry professionals.

  • Research: Our portfolio of research studies, projects and programs is vast, including both fundamental research efforts and translational programs. The research encompasses many areas in the psychopathology and psychopharmacology of neuropsychiatric disorders. This work is supported by our various cores and labs.
  • Clinical: We are dedicated to providing expert and compassionate patient care.
  • Educational: The residents and fellows accepted for our program excel in the practice of modern psychiatry and are trained to approach patient care with a full understanding of the biological, psychological, social and cultural factors that influence mental illness and treatment.

The department trains 35 residents in general psychiatry and six advanced fellows in child psychiatry. We currently have 32 academic faculty, 37 academic researchers and 96 staff in our department.
